Thank You for Attending!

Thank you to all the members and associates who were able to attend the ACT Workshop hosted by San Manuel Tribal Courts. What an amazing opportunity this was for state courts and tribal courts to come together and learn from one another.

If you were unable to attend, here are few interesting facts and takeaways from this workshop:

Tribes have always maintained a system of law and order, and have continuously exercised the right to govern their members and their conduct. For most tribal people, the historical notion of right from wrong was dictated by tradition. While the idea of justice was much different from today, it was indeed a system of order appropriate for the time.

Did you know?

  • There are 109 tribes throughout California.
  • There are 22 Tribal Courts in California, which serve 39 tribes.
  • There are four different types of Tribal Courts:
    • General: All subject matters, including Criminal.
    • Limited: Specific subject matters such as Civil, Family Law, and Probate.
    • Peace Making Courts: Focus is mainly on mediation and restoration.
    • Healing to Wellness Courts: Focus is mainly on rehabilitation.

The tribal courts are currently in their infancy stage and are just beginning to be recognized across the country. They are excited to collaborate with ACT in order to enhance their skills and abilities in the education and training of tribal court personnel.
